Alaska State Troopers
“I grew up wanting to be a police officer here in Alaska – this is where I belong.”

Sears's law enforcement career began in 1985 as a military policeman in the Army. He later spent nine months as a correctional officer in Alaska before being hired as a State Trooper in 1997. For the first nine years, Sears served as wildlife enforcement officer and worked as a drug and alcohol enforcement officer. He has served as a field training officer, diver, water safety instructor and hunter education instructor.

“Different languages, people, customs, weather – the life of a Trooper is a life of adventure.”

Anne Sears started her law enforcement career as an officer with the Juneau Police Department in 1997 and has been an Alaska State Trooper since March 2001. She is one of only a handful of women Troopers. Working with her husband Jay, they make up one of the two husband-and-wife teams on the force. As a State Trooper, Sears has worked on patrol and in investigations throughout the state.

“Here you go to work by plane, boat, snowmobile, you name it. It’s the last frontier of law enforcement.”

After meeting Troopers who were investigating a murder in which his nephew was a suspect, Steve became a Trooper himself in August 2006. He's been sent out to some of the most beautiful parts of the state. When most law enforcement officers put on their uniform to go to work, he packs his survival kit, fires up the snowmobile or gets into a jet boat or plane to go out and meet the people of Western Alaska.
